Deferrals of admission are granted only to first-year applicants admitted for the fall semester. Deferral is not automatic. Students wishing to defer their admission must make their requests in writing to the Office of University Undergraduate Admissions. A deferral is official only when you are notified via letter from the Office of University Undergraduate Admissions that your deferral has been approved. While deferral is not guaranteed and may not be available for all programs, the following are the conditions under which deferrals are usually granted:

  • You must be a fall, first-year admitted student.
  • You must send a written request for deferral to the Office of University Undergraduate Admissions by May 1, 2008. Your enrollment fee of $125.00 must be included with your request. If your deferral is not granted, your fee will be returned.
  • Deferral is granted only for a full academic year, from one fall semester to the very next fall semester.
  • You must submit, by July 11, 2008, a final official high school transcript certifying graduation and showing all courses and grades from grades 9 through 12. Deferrals are conditioned on successful completion of all senior courses with no decline in senior-year grades.
  • During the deferral year, you may not take any college transfer courses. Enrollment in any college credit-bearing courses, even if no courses are completed, will nullify the deferral. You will need to reapply and be considered as a new applicant.
  • Because all biographical and other important data must be current, all students are required to have an application on file for the year in which they wish to enroll. Even if admission is deferred, you must complete a 2009 admission application, follow all instructions, and adhere to all 2009 deadlines. No new application fee is required. You may resubmit your 2008 essay or a new one may be submitted with the 2009 application. The 2009 application will be available online at admissions.rutgers.edu in September, 2008. Use the Reapply link at that time.

Scholarships, admission to honors programs, and Educational Opportunity Fund awards are specific to each academic year and may not be deferred. Students are considered for any scholarships, awards, and honors program available under the policies in place with the new entering class.

If your deferral is granted and you follow all instructions, you will receive a 2009 admission packet by February 28, 2009. You'll need to accept the 2009 admission offer by May 1, 2009, and the enrollment fee you paid in 2008 will be applied to 2009. Please note that any current enrollment fees are forfeited if you do not meet all of the deferral requirements.
