Rutgers
Reflects the World
I'm from a predominantly white middle-class suburb and have enjoyed the diverse groups of people and activities available to me at Rutgers.  Diversity isn't just a good thing for people FROM diverse backgrounds...but also wonderful for people who come from non-diverse backgrounds to experience.
Rutgers Experiences I graduated from University College in May of 2005 and loved my Rutgers experience enough to stay for another three years while working on my master's degree! What isn't there to love about this place??? In my opinion, Rutgers University offers its students one of the most diverse campus experiences in the country. I can enjoy the Rutgers history and urban feel of College Avenue as well as Passion Puddle, Rutgers Gardens on Cook/Douglass, great basketball games, the 350-acre Ecological Preserve on Livingston, and my favorite spot...the Rutgers Football Stadium on Busch. All of these spots are just a five-minute bus ride away from my residence hall on College Avenue! In addition, New Brunswick is just a short train ride away from both New York City and Philadelphia. Great for a Broadway musical fan like myself!
Internships Rutgers University Office of Planning and Development researching historic preservation projects on campus; New Jersey Museum of Agriculture (making visual aids for senior citizen groups)
Rutgers Traditions I volunteer at two of Rutgers' finest traditions: The New Jersey Folk Festival, an annual event showcasing folk music and crafts from around the country; and Cook College Ag Field Day, an annual event showcasing the agricultural roots of Cook College. In addition, I have not missed a single Rutgers home football or women's basketball game in the last three years, and I can sing the entire Rutgers Alma Mater!
Volunteer Experiences Co-Coordinator, Salvation Army:  Organized an annual holiday party for over 80 underprivileged children from Camden, New Jersey for the past four years. Children were provided with gifts, food, entertainment, pictures with Santa, etc.  Assisting Minister, St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Cherry Hill, NJ, assisting with worship services and ministry;  Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts of America; Volunteer, East Brunswick Hadassah;  volunteer gift wrapping at local area shopping mall on all major holidays to raise money for cancer research
Clubs and Extracurricular Activities Senior Class President, UC Class of 2005; Editor-In-Chief, UC Yearbook; worked with a staff of UC students to complete the 2005 Scarlet Guild.  Director, RU V-Day Campaign.   For the past three years, I’ve directed Eve Ensler's famous play, The Vagina Monologues, to raise awareness and over $25,000 for charities working to end gender violence; resident assistant, Cook College Res-Life;  provided counseling and organized programming for over 100 transfer students;  Scarlet Ambassador, RU admissions; vice-president, American Studies; Assoc. senator, University Senate & University College Governing Association; director, Cabaret Theatre Productions; member, University Hearing Board; attained Eagle Scout, scouting's highest honor, in 1997.
Why Rutgers Well, my love of Rutgers bloomed late. I actually started out at Penn State University and later transferred to Rutgers. I didn't realize all the things that Rutgers had to offer when I was in high school and unfortunately NEVER bothered to visit. BIG MISTAKE! Fortunately for me, Rutgers loves transfer students too....so, I made the switch in the spring of 2003...and I've bled SCARLET ever since!
