Move In Weekend 2009

by System Administrator 8. September 2009 12:52

First, of all, I want to say welcome to my blog...hopefully this year I can make you smile, or think. Or both! To my readers, enjoy...to my fellow bloggers, LET'S GET IT!

I'm in the Health & Medicine Discovery House, so I moved in a day earlier than everyone else did. Between all of the Discovery Houses, I believe there was only about a hundred of us total. I showed up to RU at about 10AM. While the Move In Crew took my stuff to my room, I went and picked up my room key. Then I go upstairs to my dorm and, surprise surprise, it's HUGE. Like seriously huge. Yay for corner rooms. I slept in Frelinghuysen on College Avenue for the summer orientation and it was prison compared to this. And everyone says Livingston is beat. Lies, it's just Tillett (Busch Dining Hall FTW). So then I unpacked and made myself at home until the Move In programs started...and they basically told us what we already know, in terms of time management and making good choices. But hey, it's always good to have your memory refreshed.

By the time all that was over, plus the indoor cookout (which just doesn't feel the same, by the way), it was like...not even 8:30. RU serious? Most of us stayed in the lounge - either watching TV, listening to music, on our laptops, talking to people, or playing games (not including lame Icebreakers). And of course...probably very high up in importance...MEETING PEOPLE THAT ADDED YOU ON FACEBOOK BEFORE MOVE IN DAY! Let me talk about that real quick. It's pretty satisfying meeting those people for the first time, especially if you've managed to develop a good friendship over the internet. Unless it turns out that they mastered the camera angles and in real life they're ugly. U, G, L, Y, you ain't got no alibi. But ugly people need love too! Smile at an ugly person today.

Then came actual Move In Day the next morning, and that was crazy as hell. I don't think I've ever seen more people walking around with suitcases in my life. I went to breakfast that morning at Au Bon Pain on College Avenue...it was pretty tasty. Then I went around meeting more people...fun stuff! Especially from Facebook! :-) But the day was pretty uneventful without the Convocation...which left us at the mercy of the Scarlet Carnivale, aka Lame Fest 2009. On every campus. Good grief. Laser Tag and some other games were okay, but the DJ was whack...most of the games and prizes were whack...meh.

And then came Sunday...THROWDOWN SUNDAY! Throwdown was pretty fun; until your team comes in dead last. I think *cough* that the White Team *cough cough* CHEATED....*cough*. You should have seen the Black Team's Throwdown Dance! We killed it. Choreographed by me and my friend Candace. There's no way we came in last. And yes, I will complain about this for the rest of the year.

Did anyone try getting on buses that night? Oh right, sure you did, because EVERYONE WAS ON THE BUS. There was about 200 people packed onto each bus. Faces pressed against the windows and spleens being stepped on and everything. When the doors opened, people didn't even get off; they fell. And all that trouble, getting elbowed in the back of the head trying to get on the bus, for parties on College Avenue. I personally didn't enjoy any of them. But I guess that's just me. SURELY there will be something awesome later this semester.

After 11:59 on Sunday night began our last day before execution - um, I mean, classes. What did I do on that "Last Day Of Freedom", as my RA put it? I CHILLAXED, THAT'S WHAT I DID! I chillaxed mad hard. And then I went to the Involvement Fair. That place was packed! There were so many interesting clubs, but the only ones that I'm 100% sure I'm joining ASAP is the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the Residence Hall Association (RHA), the Bboy Club, and the Capoeira Club. The best is when you walk up to a table, pick up a pen and start writing down your contact information, and THEN someone asks, "So, are you interested in joining the Tennis Club?" No, sir, I just wanted to give you my name and email address for no reason. Jeez.

Later that night was Target Night...another less-than-amazing event, IMO. Seriously, there's no way you could have gotten exactly what you wanted if you didn't come on the first bus! Rutgers 2013 and 2015 are full of savages, for real. All I wanted was a desk calendar. And they didn't have it. But the DJ was good and I did manage to get me a nice desk fan. I'll never sweat during PreCalc homework again. Ooh baby.

And what happened the rest of the week? Well, first day of classes was tough, but I got with the program quickly. I'm still making new friends and I'm still learning. Hopefully, all of you out there do the same. Special thanks to Lee for letting me on the team and love to everyone who just read through this! RU RAH RAH!
