RU Involved?

by System Administrator 12. September 2009 00:57

Before I begin, I want to say MERCI, GRACIAS, GRAZIE, DANKE, ANK-THAY OU-YAY AND THANK YOU IN EVERY OTHER LANGUAGE to anyone who has read any one of the blogs from the Student Blog team...it's great knowing that someone is actually listening to us. Even when we say stupid sh** like this, lksdfsj;djs^%#@&_@h. Readers, stay tuned because we're just getting started...and to my colleagues, keep up the good work! <3

I can't believe I moved into college more than two weeks ago! How the time flies. Even when I'm freaking out over how I'm supposed to write a three page paper about "The Solitary Stroller and the City" by Rebecca Solnit for Expository Writing. Boy, nothing against the writing department itself, but I've got a rant for that piece of monkey BS called literature. It's probably going to have to go on YouTube, though.

Anyway, today's topic: extra-curricular activities and clubs at Rutgers! Man, it was a shock for me to come from my high school in lil ol' Lincroft, NJ (shout out to Christian Brothers Academy class of '09!) with less than forty student organizations and jump right into the smorgasbord of things to do at RU. The Involvement Fair was bananas. Live performances, free books, free t-shirts, free plants, free publications, free candy, free flyers, free pens, free pencils...I'm glad I brought my backpack. And the selection of activities was just fantastic - you name it, chances are you can do it. I even suggested an Assasination class to the people giving the $1 classes. And they actually thought about it.

Questions?

"So David, what interested you, personally?"

Right. I went to Kendo, Martial Arts Club, Ballroom Club, Haitian Association, Swing Club, Verbal Mayhem, Tennis, Ping Pong, Art House, Musician's Guild, Bboy Club, Capoeira, American Medical Students Association (AMSA), Rutgers For Life, and any club having to do with medicine, Christianity, or community service. Hopefully, this tells you a bit more about who I am.

"David, are you planning on joining all of those clubs?"

Actually, yes. I think the next four years will be a great opportunity to discover new passions. Some clubs may keep me interested for the next four years. Some may lose me after one meeting. You never know.

"Dave, you said you talked to the Recreation people. What Dollar Menu classes do you think you might take?"

Well, my schedule allows me to take a class for escapes from physical attack, photography, how to pick what dance to do to what song, finance management, communication tech, and sleep strategies (since Rutgers doesn't seem to care about us sleeping right). I haven't read the rest of the booklet, but there are a lot of interesting (but more than $1) classes in there. The only one that I definitely want right now is Intro to Breakdancing (I already break, but refresher courses work wonders for you!).

"What clubs have you already been to?"

Let's see. I went to an AMSA meeting...I'm in the Bboy Club...and I'm also rolling with Verse|One Dance Troupe. So far, my two favorites are AMSA and Verse|One. AMSA is great because I want to go into medical school and start doing pediatric cardiology, so any group willing to help me with that goal is an A+ crew in my book. And I actually have a pretty funny story about Verse|One...

Alright, so I stepped out into the hallway during Bboy Club to take a quick breather and a water break. On my way back, I saw a group of people practicing Hip Hop choreography, so I stepped inside the classroom and asked what was going on. "Verse|One," somebody said. I nodded and stayed to watch the rest of the show, and it turned out that all of them were really good dancers. And then they asked me if I wanted to learn! (not how to dance, the choreo) So, what was the coolest, smoothest thing I could say? "BUT I'M NOT ASIAN." Mucho suave. If an all-Asian dance crew asks a non-Asian to join, OBVIOUSLY they will take you if you accept. That is now officially Rule #1 of Joining Dance Crews In College. So I stuck around until the end of practice and ended up learning a sick number to "My Love" by Justin Timberlake. Yay! Now I just have to worry about my muscles recovering from the beatdown I put them through with breaking AND intricate choreography.

But back to the question...I'm definitely trying at Capoeira as soon as possible - but the thing is, for this semester, I'm probably going to stop there. AMSA seems to be a good enough club for pre-meds to be involved with, and I love dance so I won't drop breakdancing, Verse|One, or Capoeira if I can help it. Right now, I really just want to pump my GPA up until after Christmas break. Then, I'll get even more active (as long as I can keep my grades up). But remember - being the president in one club is better than never moving up in eight clubs!

"Have you looked into any fraternities?"

To be honest, I never really was too interested in frats to start with. If I find a good one in which initiation doesn't involve streaking through Livingston after downing eight shots of Everclear, I might go for it.

"You do know that you're talking to yourself, right?"

Shut up.

What can I say? By doing stuff you're interested in, you're bound to meet others with the same interests. And if you're single, maybe even the man or woman of your dreams! (as long as it's not the instructor...) So you think about that while I go catch some sleep. I've got Expos, Precalc, and Bio homework to do, along with a Bio quiz I've got to study for. Wish me luck, and also good luck to the Scarlet Knights today against Howard! Ganbare! \(^_^)/

My toddlers loved the video, as well.  We had to watch it like 10 times.  I think they want to learn to dance, so keep all that comin'!

Ahaha no problem Lee, I actually have a clip from practice last night's practice - so I'll either post that up next time or a solo video. I'll definitely teach your toddlers some choreo one of these days! Smile

haha I don't even go to rutgers and I went to the bboyclub once and am planning on keep on going. The guys there are pretty chill (ima nub) and they make new people feel welcome. What more clubs are at rutgers that someone not from there can join? Tong
