Coming into college I didn’t really know what to expect from an academic standpoint. Sure, I had attended the tours and the seminars in the months prior to the start of school, but I had no idea what would await for me on September 1st, which was the first day of the fall semester. Part of me wondered if college would be similar to high school. Upon arriving, I was pleasantly surprised that this assumption wasn’t the case.
In college everything runs much more smoothly. Gone are the days of crowded high school hallways. Since everyone has a unique schedule, people come and go as they please at all times. In terms of the workload there is more homework given in college in comparison to high school, but in some cases it is on you to complete it. What I mean by this is there are some professors that assign readings and practice problems after every lecture, but don’t check it or count it as a grade. These assignments are still essential because they will appear in some form on the exams.
I like the fact that the majority of my homework assignments are assigned over the internet. This is much more convenient because you don’t have to carry stacks of paper back and forth. This takes some getting used to, as each class uses a different online service to assign homework on. For instance, my College Algebra class assigns homework on WebAssign, whereas my Financial Accounting class uses MyAccountingLab. These services can be a bit tricky to use at first, so be sure to try them out by doing one of the practice assignments or else you may end up messing up your homework like I did. Also, it can be quite challenging to keep track of all your assignments, papers and exams. Organization is key to success in college.
After experimenting with solutions, I've found one: Google Calendar. This free online service enables you to schedule what days you have classes and what rooms they are located in. In addition, you can also add a reminder for when each of your assignments are due.
And that about does it for today be sure to check back later next week for an in depth look at what there is to do in the city of Newark.
