Living in The Cobb

by System Administrator 14. September 2009 16:40

Hello again everyone! After a rainy, cold past couple of days, Douglass has returned to its happy, sunny mood again.

Just so everyone knows, I live on the best campus at Rutgers! Douglass, unlike all the other campuses, offers more than just a place to live. Before the merge of all the schools into SEBS and SAS, Douglass was the largest public women's college in the nation. After the unification, Douglass transformed into Douglass Residential College, which is community for women students at Rutgers. The staff and alumae at DRC create programs that help us succeed and lead in ways we never even imagine!

Douglass just makes me feel warm and fuzzy because it's like a family here. It's really the best of both worlds because we get the small-college-feel with personalized advising, guaranteed externships with an alumnae in our field of choice, living-learning communities, quirky traditions, and leadership opportunities. However, we still have all the access to Rutgers-- which is an amazing university with endless resources and brilliant professors.

Douglass identifies ways to help women succeed in their academic and life goals. And that's what they call the "Douglass Difference" I've only been here for a couple of weeks, but I feel it already. There is a sense of unity and pride in our community. On move-in day, alumni were standing the pouring rain welcoming all the new students and giving us lanyards for our keys. Wow, I'm so happy to join a community of strong, inspirational women.

My major is Pharmacy, and Douglass pours so much time and effort into ensuring women stay and excel in the sciences. The statistics for women in the sciences is actually really grim... but Douglass wants to change that!

I am a part of Project SUPER (Science for Undergraduates: Program for Excellence in Research) and Bunting-Cobb Residence Hall. Project SUPER connects me to a paid lab internship with a faculty mentor in my science field of choice. WOW?!? How amazing is that. And Bunting-Cobb is where I live right now! Life in the Cobb is definitely interesting. We have a theme song, a library (a very tiny library), a computer lab with free printing, and an amazingly cozy and spacious lounge with a LCD TV. About 100 science/math/tech majors live in The Cobb... it's a little geeky but absolutely adorable and fun! Also, we have in-house tutoring for those tough science subjects as well as academic programs and seminars. Bunting-Cobb is also about a 30 second walk to the Chang Science Library, a 1-minute walk to the Neilson Dining Hall, and a 2-minute walk to the bus stop. It's all about location, location, location. Haha. Well, it does matter when it's raining and cold...

Here are some website that may be interest you:

Douglass: so many amazing programs here!
Douglass Project: they organize Project SUPER and make sure we're all happy at Bunting-Cobb.

Oh, and everything that Douglass offers is free, all you have to do is join the community-- which is easy! Can't beat that. If anyone has any questions about Douglass, free feel to ask me!

My home:

Beautiful, right? I walk along this when I get back from the classes or the Douglass cafe. It's right after the Passion Puddle.

Passion Puddle. Rumors goes if a Cook guy and Douglass girl walk around the puddle three times, they'll get married. It's super pretty... probably the most photogenic place at Rutgers.

Hi,

I am going to be a sophomore transfer student in the fall and am excited to be a part of Douglass College. I am an animal science major and was wondering how you got involved with the SUPER program. That sounds like a fantastic opportunity that I would love to be involved with.

Hi, I'm going to be a freshman this fall I a just filled out my application for Bunting-Cobb. As silly as this sounds (or maybe not), I have no idea what they are asking when the want "Campus Address (PO)." Is this for students who are already living in a different dorm and want to transfer to fill out?

BTW, I think the Douglass campus is gorgeous and the food (very important) is great!

Sorry for the delayed response.

CarolAnn, check out this website:

Fill out the website and send it through the mail:

It's a great program, and the office is so encouraging and kind in helping people navigate through the science programs and plan for graduate school.

Hoan, campus PO is where your PO box is. It's where you get all your mail. All campus residents have a PO address.

I am going to be joining DRC and living in Bunting Cobb this fall. I am very excited and would love to see some pictures inside the residence hall. I can't find any on the internet and would love to get a feel for the room layout (especially closet space). Would you be willing to post a picture or two from inside?
Thanks a bunch
Erika
