An abstract rehearsal and other randomness

by System Administrator 15. September 2009 22:51

On Sunday I had my first rehearsal for a student choreographed piece by an upperclassman student.  We started off doing an exercise by writing on the white board words we thought of when we thought of "fire".  The obvious words were placed on the board first (hot, red, steamy, etc).  However, after a few rounds my three fellow dancers and myself were forced to think more creatively.  Better examples followed like "revolution", "suffocation", "tribal", and "passion".  After our choreographer told us to stop, we then had to start erasing words until only 8 remained.  We were then told to go to a wall, press up against it, and act as though only contact with the wall keeps us standing/supported.  If that wasn't difficult enough, we each had to portray our two words in our individual creations.  My uber-fantastic words were "suffocation" and "life".

Describing the rest of this exercise would be confusing and obscure, so I'll skip the details: all you have to know is I now have random bruises all on my body due to my relentless running into plaster walls.

The next exercise was to move our choreographed part to the center and use the other 3 dancers as the wall.  Obviously, it was a bit more difficult.  Next, we all had to do our parts at the same time; however, the same rules applied and forced us to work together in a collaborative way.  And in two hours, we were done.  Hopefully I will be able to snag a video of the work so far and post so you all get to experience the epicness.

In other interesting news, I wound up getting my first college haircut!  My roommate and two friends decided on Monday the 14th to try and get a haircut on college ave.  We researched everything and found a few different places (such as Red's Barber, College Cuts, and a few more).  However, finding these locales were more difficult than expected and we wound up back in New Gibbons without haircuts (though we snagged some fat sandwiches).  Finally, today (the 14th) my roomie and I tried (once again) to find the mythical haircutter place.  After parading around for around an hour and a half, we finally walk into this hair salon and get our hair cut (FINALLY!).  Moral of the story- never give up :)
