Hey readers and colleages...right now I'm sitting in General Biology with Dr. Martin. This class meets twice a week in a pretty big lecture hall on Busch. It doesn't move too slowly, so this is definitely one class you should pay attention in if you don't want to miss anything. Luckily, I'm a really fast typist so if she goes to a slide with information on it, I can jump back to Word and copy it down. Speaking of slides, that's one of my problems with this class - I think my professor spends way too much time explaining pictures and not enough time on slides with actual text on it. Definitely study for this class. Remember that college isn't like high school - if you mess up once here, chances are your grade is going to stay messed up for the rest of the semester. So, as easy as it is to skip or not pay attention, go to class and pay attention! You'll feel so much better when the exam comes up. I don't mind Lab much, but it's SO LONG. Three hours cooped up in a small lab room. I miss high school lab classes. Only 90 minutes. *sigh*
In case you don't remember, I'm a PreMed student. Meaning that before I get to medical school, I'm going to have to take General Bio, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. I think some other classes are included, but I can't remember right now...ew.
So let's see; what else am I getting edumacated on...
EXPOSITORY WRITING - DR. WALTER
Yes, it IS as bad as you've heard. Were you a good writer in high school? Do you know what a thesis is? Can you string up a good 5 page paper in a week? Think again. Expos is the toughest English class I've ever been in. The readings are tough, the papers are tough, and the grading is tough. However, Dr. Walter is a great guy. My advice for this class is start assignments as soon as you get them. The-night-before Special is not gonna fly in college!
PRECALCULUS 111 - PROFESSOR HOROWITZ
If you're a PreMed student like myself, chances are that you're pretty good at math. Chances are that, also like me, you didn't place into Calculus on the RU Placement Test and you landed in PreCalc 115. PreCalc 115 is a super accelerated, monster class. It's a one semester course that packs an entire academic year of PreCalc into four months. I dropped that class. Why? According to statistics, about less than 8% of 115 students can hit an A, and I need those for Med school. PreCalculus 111 is pretty easy though. Like any class you'll take in college, it's not a complete sleep course. You don't want to be staring at a 40 on a quiz on factoring. However, if you think you can handle 115, handle it with pride, homeboi / homegirl.
ODASIS
ODASIS isn't a class, but an organization (Office of Diversity And Success In Sciences). It's a multi-ethnic organization that tutors science majors. They're actually the ones that told me to go to PreCalc 111. They're really good people, and I believe that it's a great resource, ESPECIALLY if you want to go to Med school since they send a lot of students there. However, they do pack an extra five hours of Bio into my schedule per week (Recitation, Computer Sessions, & Discussion Groups. Ew; again.)
DEATH & AFTERLIFE - PROFESSOR OBAYASHI
So, here's my thing about D&A. I like Professor Obayashi. He's a funny guy and I like his accent (I believe he's Japanese). But I hate this class. It's boring! To be honest, I'm only taking it to fulfill my Humanities requirement. This class is in the Religon department, but I think it's more of a History class. Or not even that, let's take it back to the fourth grade for a minute with SOCIAL STUDIES! Fun fact, my sixth grade Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Campo, was gorgeous. But that's besides the point. So what is this class about? Well, basically, we learn about what ancient believed about death...and afterlife. Okay, you can wake up now. I'm done. Sorry about that.
EXPLORING HEALTH & MEDICINE - DAN MCGRUTHER
This class is a FIG (First year Interest Group). Not necessarily a sleep class, but pretty close. My "professor" is a junior named Dan. He's a nice guy that likes to dance when he asks for people to volunteer to answer a question. But no laptops allowed. Lame! FIGS are good to take if you know what you want to study. Or if you just want to have 12 credits. Either way, it's a good atmosphere. Me likey.
And that's what my Fall semester looks like. So apparently for the spring semester, the students are required to get on WebReg and create it from scratch...may God have mercy on our souls. Seriously. WebReg is a huge pain sometimes. The worst is when you click on a class that's open and then it turns out to be closed because someone else on another campus or at home clicked on it two seconds before you did. Just like eBay. :-) But good luck to you all...so far, I know I'm signing up for a Byrne Seminar on Anatomy, General Bio 102, PreCalc 112, and Sociology of Health & Medicine. Thanks for reading! <3
