If you want a Disney happily ever after then the Cook campus masquerade ball will not cut it for you. Okay, so I know I live on Douglass and therefore probably wasn't the target audience for the Cook ball on this Sunday, but do you think that stopped me? Nope. My roommate Nick, my friend Nicole, and I left our New Gibbons dorm around 8:30 pm all dressed in our nice clothes- the boys in suits and Nicole in a party dress. The ball was advertised to start at 7:02 (random, I know), was to be held in the Cook Campus Center, and we were told to "dress to impress". But that was all the information we got. In fact, we only found out about the event the previous day! Anyways, we got to the CCC and found the "party"... emphasis on the quotation marks around "party". While the large activities room was set up with balloons, tables, food, and music (DJ included), there were only around thirty people. Since most of those thirty people were RAs from Cook and therefore required to attend, the list of interested students were probably 8. And I'm proud to be one of those 8. The food was okay and the company was a bit stiff, but I was determined to have fun. We headed straight for the vacant dance floor (since basically everyone was sitting awkwardly at tables) and tried to liven up the atmosphere. Now, I'm sure I sound a bit pretentious, but my friends and I know how to have fun: my roommate can party dance better than anyone I've ever met, and we don't really care if we look foolish as long as we are enjoying ourselves. (It also helped that I would probably never see most of those people again in my Rutgers experience). Unfortunately, the DJ was horrendous. He was only playing really un-danceable songs, or old-school party songs like the electric slide. In addition, he kept switching songs after only a few moments. However, we tried. On the postive side, we got these cool masks, we met some fun people, and we were able to brighten up the mood of the party.
As a side note for anymore Rutgers events:
-Make sure there is proper advertisment for events; otherwise no one will come.
-Make sure there is a good DJ who plays music that people actually can dance to and enjoy.
