As many of you already know, today is the New Jersey Gubernatorial Election. In other words, it is a fancy way of saying the New Jersey Governor Election.
You may be asking yourself, "why is he talking about voting on the Rutgers Student Blog?" On the surface the two don't appear to be related at all.
However, the two are very much tied together for a number of reasons.
In this brief post, we are going to look at just how important your voice is in shaping the State as well as Rutgers for years to come.
First off, whoever is elected governor (barring any unforeseen circumstances) will be in office for the next four years. That is quite a long time, and many of us will be out in the real world at some point during the next term.
In the real world things such as taxes and tolls become important, and you are going to want a governor, who can get things accomplished by keeping these things low.
New Jersey jobs are another key issue to consider.
Think about it, in four years many of us college students, ideally, will have an entry-level job or at least be pursuing one. However, there is no guarantee that the economy will have rebounded by then to make this an easy task.
However, there are things that can be done by the governor to try to improve the situation. One of the ways is by luring large companies into the state, possibly via the use of tax incentives.
Lastly, being a state school, Rutgers receives a lot of funding from the government. Thus, the governor has a large say in the creation of programs, such as research, and expansions, like the new Business School building in Newark, relating to the University.
It doesn't matter who you vote for or whether or not your friends and family approve of your choice. Some of the issues I have mentioned above may not be as important to you as other issues, and that's OK.
All that matters is that at some point today you get out and let your voice be heard.
