Plans

by System Administrator 3. November 2009 12:02

We're already two months in (we all unanimously wonder how October disappeared...), so countdowns to Thanksgiving and winter break have officially commenced! That also means, we're all starting to plan our winter and spring schedule. I'm pretty sure Rutgers is a completely different world with its time zone (warp?). Days and nights fly by at Rutgers like you're always in fast-forward motion. The weather is crazy too! When it rains, only an Olympic swimmer with ultra-plastic rainboots could stand a chance. Umbrellas simply won't do.  If you were a decent writer in the world you've known before Rutgers, Expository Writing will change your mind. You enter college-- and your essays are suddenly vague, incoherent blobs of fluffy words that fail to compare two/three essays from that glorious blue Humanities Reader book.  Rutgers has a way of making you question everything what you've always accepted as true, especially your perception of time.

Anyways, I'm devoting this post sharing my upcoming plans with you! It's going to be a busy few weeks, winter break, and spring semester. Whoa!

I applied for Alternative Spring Break, which is an opportunity to serve a less-fortunate community with other Rutgers students during your spring break. If I am selected, I will definitely update everyone on the program! It sounds incredibly exciting and rewarding, so keep your fingers crossed for me :)

Douglass has an awesome externship program! Here is a little excerpt from the website:"The Associate Alumnae of Douglass College Extern Program is one of the largest programs of its kind in the country, allowing Douglass College students to "try on a career for size." Each year, hundreds of students work for a week or two (during winter and spring semester breaks) with alumnae mentors whose careers most closely parallel their own particular interests." I applied for a position at a Carnegie Mellon University biophysics lab and a position working with Sesame Street! If that goes well, I'll be spending two weeks of my winter break exploring careers with an awesome Douglass alumna.

I am also applying for the Douglass Orientation Committee since I had a great time at mine. I love being involved with Douglass, as you can tell.

Last Friday, I met with my advisor, Dean Michelle Jefferson, to discuss my spring semester courses. Here's what I have in mind:

- General Chemistry II
- Writing (which is not Expos! Hurrah!)
- Issues in Women's Leadership (mandatory class for Douglass students)
- Basic Statistics in Research
- Systems Physiology (this is the class that will consume my life...I can tell already)
- Introduction to Scientific Research (it's a class and lab work hybrid. It's run by the Douglass Project to help undergrad women get research experience)
- Pharmacy Convocations (class for freshmen Pharmacy students)

Wow, actually, now that I see all of that in writing, it's really intimidating. Hm. Okay. Let's see how that works out...

I'm also hoping to be a part of the Rising Leaders Institute. It's a non-credit weekly Leadership class. I had a great experience at Leadership Quest last summer, and this seems like Leadership Quest Part II. Rutgers has so many resources for students to learn and grow.

I'll let you guys know whether I'm accepted to any of these programs... and then I'll write about them, of course!

I'm so proud of myself for keeping my flower plant alive and well!

Oh Phyllis, my favorite Pharm Geek. Good read. Good luck with everything and good job keeping your flower alive.

I'm kind of freaked out that we're going to be building our schedules by ourselves this time around. I'd suggest definitely having some possible schedules done on coursetopia.com, and study up on what people say on ratemyprofessors.com.

As for me, so far all I know is that I'm taking out my second writing course as a PreMed student, along with Bio 102, PreCalc 111 (again...ugh), the Byrne Seminar called "The Physiology of Health & Medicine", and whatever else will bring me up to a decent amount of credits. The war of the Red and Green draws near haha. <3

I want to take a Byrne seminar! But they're tough to fit into schedules. Frown

OH what would I do without ratemyprofessors!? it's amazing.
