Students enter college with many goals, but there is one that unifies nearly all of us: we all want a good job. Be it students straight out of high school like myself, working parents that inspire me, or tattooed people who make me feel old (I only knew one person with a tattoo in high school), we're all working now so we can have satisfactory jobs in the future.
That's where the Rutgers Career center comes in.

Here's the outside hallway of the center. Today Rutgers Health Services distributed our second round of H1N1 vaccines. Health Services Staff are the people sitting at the table. I'm so happy I got the vaccine, for free, I might add!
Anyway,I feel like now is as good a time as ever for me to talk about the center since I've been to several of their events and talked to two advisors. So far I've been to four career center events, not including the job and graduate school fairs. One was a Pre-Med seminar, another an Arts/Culture jobs workshop , an incredibly insightful talk about getting into graduate school, and a Careers in Advertising and Communications panel that occurred just last Tuesday (as seen below). It was a really interesting panel with locals who took their creativity and applied it to a job they could get paid for.

Not only are the programs the career center runs great, but they generally have pizza and drinks. I am sad to say I missed a free dining etiquette class, which I could greatly benefit from, that included free dinner. More importantly than the short term effects of a full belly are the long term effects of getting involved with the Rutgers Career Center.
First off, the Career Center offers great advising and help writing resumes, praticing interviews etc. So far I've met with the Pre-Med advisor, and recieved a follow up email from another advisor after the Arts/Culture workshop. She gave out a hand out during the workshop that we wrote our interests on and she followed up with an email citing tons of writing internships and opportunities for me! At the Pre-med advising I learned about a new research opportunity. The Career Center has so much opportunity they had to take some of it to the boards outside of the center! (The later at night it is, the funnier most jokes are. Adjust your reading time accordingly.)

I've heard a lot of people cite a statistic implying a lot of hirers look for field experience in their prospective employees. I know Med school looks favorably on research. Rutgers is on the ball with hooking students up with internships and jobs, from what I can see.
I also love how Rutgers gives me room to explore different occupations. I know I love to write, but I also love Biology and Psychology. When I was taking pictures for this post I hung out in the Career Center a bit and paged through some of their literature. I looked at some Disney internship information, and carefully read through a book about Veterinarians. I look forward to figuring out my future with the Rutgers Career Center and love knowing that as long as I work hard enough, I have the resources to be whoever I want to be.
Already, it's time for me to go to bed. I really need to stop waiting until after poetry night to write these.
