Where do I look on the Bus?

by System Administrator 10. December 2009 18:48

So many questions surround us. We are freshman in college, we have entered a new, exciting, unknown world. Through my first semester here at Rutgers I have accumulated many of these random questions and have tried to answer them too! Some of them serious, some less serious but all equally puzzling, maybe.Perhaps some will make you wonder, some will make you laugh, and some may even make you think, this girl needs to stop with the caffeine and get some sleep. Anyway here are a few of the questions I have been thinking about...

Why is it that I have 185 meal swipes left and I still get breakfast at Au Bon Pain? This one is an easy one, Brower sucks and Brower is what is close to me. The coffee is horrible there, and I would rather pay my $2.50 for my cafe Americano than deal with coffee weaker than Dunkin Donuts. Make sure you have a little extra cash, just in case you don’t want to eat at the dinning hall sometimes. The RU Express is really great, I put about a hundred dollars on it at the beginning of the year, and didn’t worry about actual cash. I always have my ID card with me, so I always have some money.

Speaking of coffee, why do I drink so much of it? This is one of the simpler ones, coffee=life. Life-coffee=death. This one is just simple math. Drink a lot of caffeine.

Also speaking of dinning halls, why don’t I ever go to Busch, which has much better food than Brower? Because I’m lazy, Brower is across the street and Busch is a bus ride away. I’d rather endlessly complain than take the extra time to go get good food. Explore other dining halls, branch out, you’ll be a happier person. Don’t be lazy, be happy.

Why do I need such a high meal plan when it is practically impossible for me to eat half of the meals I had to purchase? Apparently the dinning hall loses money after a certain amount of meals a student uses, and we can’t have that now can we? How will we fund the football team? Just a note, when you pick your meal plan, unless you eat a lot and by that I mean like four times a day please select the lowest plan possible, which is actually really high.

How did I suddenly become a napper? Before college I never napped, now all I do is nap. Napping is a must for a college student, learn how to nap or die. In fact, napping is a law, if you don’t nap as a college student you are actually breaking the law. Take a lot of naps, but learn about the delicate balance I state below.

Can you talk on the phone on the bus? NO! It is rude and annoying, please stick to texting but don’t elbow the person next to you please, as that is also annoying. Please just don’t do annoying on the bus and everyone will be happy.

Why is it that the buses never run on the same schedule, like how come the A bus can’t come at 8:15 every morning, why does it come at 8:10 some days and 8:20 on others? Because the Rutgers bus system hates you. It wants to prepare you for the real world, even the NJTransit manages to run an entire state’s mass transit system on time. To prevent standing outside in the freezing cold for ten minutes, use nextbus, it’s a lifesaver.

How is it that I can perfectly awake one moment and as soon as I enter lecture I can’t keep my eyes open? This one is another simple one. In a lecture hall of three-hundred people and a monotone professor going on about something I don’t care about, it is impossible to stay tuned in. In these situations coffee is a must, do not attempt such situations without coffee, it is also against the law. Also try your hardest to focus on the lecture, it will really help you later.

In a university of more than 30,000 people how is it that I see the same people all the time? And I’m not talking about the people in my dorm or my classes, but the girl that I sat next to on the train home, happens to sit next to me on the A bus. Or that, without a doubt you will always see the guy who tries to flirt with you at a party about a million other times. The first part I have no explanation for, it is a freaky occurrence that actually scares me. The second one is easy, the world likes to throw people into awkward situations, especially college students. If you see the girl you sit next to on the train somewhere else, strike up a conversation, maybe she can be a new friend. If you find yourself in one of the awkward situations, do what my roommate does, shrug your shoulders and run away.

How come I have so much to say about everything else, but as soon as I have to write a paper for a class, I have nothing to say? Class is boring, life is exciting. I actually keep a notebook with me at all times and write down my thoughts for later, that way when I go to write I have some ideas.

Why do I always say I’m wearing sweatpants to my 8am class yet I always get dressed? This is because there is always the possibility of meeting a cute guy or someone I know, and I always feel like such a bum in sweatpants therefore I don’t wear sweatpants. However every day while I sit through class all I want is sweatpants. I think the true question here is what is wrong with me. If sweatpants make you happy, wear sweatpants, it’s your body, and you should be comfortable, especially at 8am!

Why can’t I fall asleep at midnight but I go right to sleep at noon? Because while naps are the law, actual sleep is sadly illegal. The trick to this one is napping the right amount. Too much napping causes no sleep at night, but not enough causes sleepiness during the day. It is a delicate system, but don’t worry you’ll learn it. If you can’t master the science though, I hate to say it, but maybe naps are not for you.

How is it Alexander Library is so big but finding a good seat is like mission impossible? Because the library is awkward, I’m sorry but it is true. There are good seats, you just have to find your way through the maze and discover them. Don’t settle for a bad seat, if people are loud around you move, there are other seats somewhere.

Why is it that my lowest grade is in my easiest class? I am actually not sure why, but I’d like to figure out the answer to this one too it really doesn’t make sense to me.

Why does Expos exist? To punish innocent freshman, to make sure you can’t get a perfect GPA in your first semester, and to create a bond of hate between all freshman at Rutgers. No but really, go into any freshman dorm and you automatically have something to discuss. Also don’t let expos scare you, as long as you read and try in expos you should do fine. If you’re struggling or know you’ll struggle, sign up with a writing tutor at the beginning of the semester, they will really help. Also remember that only three of the five papers you write count, and think about it, five papers is not that bad. Finally, no matter how much freshman may bitch about expos, I did learn how to write an amazing thesis, which will help me for the rest of my life.

Why is it that Rutger’s facilities only have two temperatures, igloo and sauna? This is a point my FIGS instructor brought up and I have realized to be very true. The only explanation I can offer is that there has been a mass breakdown of all thermostats on campus, which seems unlikely... Dress in layers, problem solved.

And finally where do I look when I’m on the bus? There can be so much awkwardness, I mean the position of your eyes on the bus can be as awkward as two exes stuck on an elevator, and if you’ve ever seen Grey’s Anatomy you know how awkward that can be. I mean too high and you’re making awkward eye contact, too low and you’re awkwardly starring at someone’s crouch. In the middle you’re looking at their boobs even more awkwardly. Do you see a theme here? Perhaps it’s awkwardness. Sadly there is no way to fix this situation, there is no good place to look on the bus, also there is no way to not feel awkward on an elevator, just in case you were wondering. There is no solution to this one. You will always feel awkward on a bus and you will always feel awkward on an elevator, it’s part of life, deal with it.

Well, on that note, that’s all I have for this semester. I hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season and I’ll be back next semester.

Um, hey Tori. I just wanted to tell you that I just fell in love with you. We must go out sometime, and since Lee said we're not employees that's perfectly okay. Lol. Awesome post.

HAHA, omg. This was great.

Perhaps, Expos is just a subject freshmen bond over...

Hi Tori!
First of all it's a 'Great Post'!
I loved the way you described the bus awkward situation. I have realized this myself as well! GREAT...

During the bus ride, I see people looking outside or trying to look outside of the bus. But sometimes they try to look at the others sitting beside them until they notice. Then they start over looking outside at the river or some building until they think it's time to see them again. This cycle goes on until the person gets off or someone else chimes in!

But the question still remains 'where to look while you are in a bus?'
I think the answer is: "look at the BUS driver"!

LOL!

Caitlin,

I have a Rutgers friend who is from Maryland, and she happens to like New Jersey more than Maryland! New Brunswick offers a lot of diversity, so I'm sure you'll find something you love.

There are many food options in new brunswick. From all different price ranges! Dining hall food is well, dining hall food...

It's easy to make friends at Rutgers! Don't worry Smile People are very open in a college setting. And there are many guys here at Rutgers so that's not a concern.

Hope you apply to Rutgers and visit!
