Lesson I Wish I Learned Sooner

Lesson I Wish I Learned Sooner:

There's no shame in getting help in a class that is particularly bothering you. There's slightly more shame in having to retake said class.

Rutgers University offers plenty of top-notch tutoring facilities for those students who need a little extra help. Do not be stubborn. Do not be macho. If you need help, seek it immediately.

I'm in a somewhat unique position. I am currently both a tutor (at the Plangere Writing Center on College Ave) and a student enrolled in a tutoring program (Student Support Services for Math 026 to be precise). I should have sought help last semester, but I rather stupidly decided that because I was employed as a tutor, I did not need to seek tutoring services. You do not need to be a philosophy major to know that this premise was illogical.

I am taking Intermediate Algebra for a second time, thanks in part to sheer pigheadedness. Learn from my mistakes.

No one will mock you for seeking tutoring. Even if someone were to poke fun at you for needing help, isn't having a higher GPA worth it? Your tutor will not be a condescending *@#!. This is my second semester working for Plangere, and I have plenty of friends who have used SSS or other tutoring services. The tutors are your fellow students, and they are usually by nature very awesome people.

Anyway, I'm going to have to get off of my soapbox. I have plenty of work to catch up on.

Good advice, John!  And a great plug for the Writing Center.

Truly great advice! Many people feel asking for help might make them look lesser than themselves in the eyes of others but when you succeed because of the help and your actions it's a great feeling.

Great advice and better you learned it now in your first year than much later in your academic career.  You are not alone if having to learn this lesson the hard way.  Hopefully someone who will be a Rutgers student in the future will remember this and not make the same mistakes that a lot of students do.

This is so true. Would you rather look back on your college career and remember going to tutoring or getting bad grades? There's no shame in getting help, and there's a lot of pride and advantages in good grades.

Good for you!
