Readers and bloggers, today's blog is brought to you by a text I recieved exactly five minutes ago. So shout outs to my friend Tiffany, who is going to be a fresh(wo)man at Rutgers this fall! Thank you babe; I had NO idea what I was gonna write about this week before you came along. Lol. :-)
So the question is...what are the pros and cons of Livingston?
Well, chances are that most incoming freshmen hear that Livingston is definitely the worst place to live at Rutgers. Also, you're going to hear a lot of things about the other campuses: College Avenue is the party campus, Busch is the Asian campus, Cook is the farm animal middle-of-nowhere campus, and Douglass is the pretty, girls everywhere campus. Of course, a lot of these are RIGHT in their own way, but it's always better to hear the perspective from someone who actually LIVES there.
PROS
1. Livingston Campus has a primarily freshman population, so hopefully you can make a lot of friends your age.
2. The buildings are all relatively close to each other.
3. The library is pretty dope. There are glass rooms upstairs with chalkboards where you can get a lot of studying done. Remember, if you can teach someone something, then you won't forget it!
4. Specialty days at the dining hall are always crazy. Midknight Breakfast, Hawaiian, King Neptune...long lines, but it's definitely worth it.
5. Breakfast is served into the afternoon on weekends, so go ahead and sleep your lazy ass in. Holla!
6. The Rec Center is a great place to work out! Outside of it, there are tennis courts, basketball courts, hockey fields and volleyball nets. Plus, during the year there are a variety of classes there - learn yoga, how to give a massage, new dance moves, etc.!
7. DANCERS - The Rec Center's MULTIPURPOSE ROOM is huge, has wooden floors, and MIRRORS! Perfect for freestyling, or making / cleaning choreo.
8. The Quad 3 and South Tower Coffeehouses! Great places to get some lemonade / iced tea, hot chocolate, or coffee and a snack! Plus, sometimes they have pretty nice events (i.e. Floetry Friday, a poetry night in which I performed at a couple of months ago!)
9. For the most part, Livi is nice and quiet!
10. Trying to ask a girl out? Take her to the roof of Tillet! The scenery up there is pretty nice, especially at night when there are stars out. As for HOW to get there...I don't think I should put it in this blog haha.
11. Are you Pre-Law, Pre-Business, Pre-Medicine, or thinking about majoring in Psychology? Then you should dorm at the DISCOVERY HOUSES of Quad 2! They are living-learning communities where you will dorm with people who have the same career interests as you do, leading to deeper friendships and better studying!
12. If it snows a lot...expect huge snowball fights. Guaranteed.
13. SBarro's, a pizza place in the Student Center, accepts meal swipes as payment!
14. The student center is gonna be dope...when it's finished, of course.
15. If you don't know where you want to live when you're picking your spring housing and you have a shitload of friends, all of you can apply for one house in Quad 3. Or maybe even two. OR MAYBE EVEN ALL OF QUAD 3. Wow, imagine all of your friends living in one big section of a college campus? That would be sick.
CONS
1. Tillett Dining Hall. The food there is good...for about the first week. -__- Yes, Livi's dining hall SUCKS. You will not want to eat there unless you are starving and if you take the time to go to another campus, you would die. Or you're late for a class and don't time for anything else but their takeout. But, in Tillett's defense, College Avenue's dining hall is definitely worse. Busch / Nielson (on Cook/Douglass) are definitely the best.
2. It's a pain in the ass to get to Beck Hall, the Business School, or the Student Center if you live in the Quads (on the other side of campus). There are days where I seriously considered taking an LX all the way around Livi and through College Ave., and back to Livi so I wouldn't have to walk to Beck.
3. Some of the students on Livi are pretty vicious when it comes to the library's study rooms. If you want one, GET THERE EARLY. Or you're gonna be in the Yorba Lounge cramming for Bio.
4. Lots of people on Livi do NOT observe quiet hours. So be prepared to live with those a-holes who are blasting techno music at 1AM.
5. Dunkin Donuts, in the Student Center, does NOT accept meal swipes as payment... :-(
6. Honestly, living in the Quads is kind of like being in a dungeon.
7. Quad 2's main lounge sucks compared to Quads 1 and 3, which are bigger and have pianos. :-(
8. No wireless connection in your room! :-( Bring an ethernet cable...15 - 25 feet, depending on how far away you are from the outlet.
9. Some of the dorm room windows in the Quads are right by the bus stops...aka Thursday - Saturday night, you'll hear something like, "WHOOO I'M SO WASTED RIGHT NOW!" at 2AM.
One last note...not exactly a pro or con, but the Quad floors are boy-girl-boy-girl while the floors of the towers are co-ed FYI. Have fun choosing where you want to live for Fall '10, everyone!
You're welcome, Tiff.
