How Did I Get Here?

by System Administrator 9. June 2010 12:11

One of the cool things about having Lee Dmochowski as your boss (besides free food, advice, and rides) is that after it's all said and done, she doesn't forget that you exist! <3

So today, since I've been told that the Student Blogger Applications are out, I decided to post my Application Essay (courtesy of Lee actually keeping it) for the readers to look at - all 300 words of WIN. If you're applying, maybe this will inspire you to be yourself, because no one on the team this year was a boring person. Just don't bite my style. Wink Good luck!

I am someone who always has something to say, whether I am getting a t-shirt for it or not (and I NEVER get a t-shirt, so I’m already excited).  When I write about my experiences, I try to make it as re-readable as possible; meaning that my blogs would be more than just descriptions – one would be reading a story, but not a piece of junk like Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott (Just my opinion). Since I am a poet, I feel that I would be obligated to engage my readers in what I’m talking about and make them think more than, “Oh, that was pretty well written.” With so many possibilities as a Rutgers student - from the course load, to parties, to student organizations, and many other things – combined with my writing ability and sense of humor, I don’t doubt that I can put someone through a sort of sensory overload if I’m turned loose as one of the Rutgers Bloggers. The July Issue of The Daily Targum (I really wish I knew what a targum is, by the way) that I received told me that I’m only one of more than fifty-thousand students attending Rutgers this fall – so how hard can it be to find something to talk about if I don’t spend the entire year in a coma?

So why would I, David Alexis, be a great Rutgers blogger?  I believe that my humor, willingness to write, and previous writing experience provides a sharp edge. It is also evident that I am going to be different from what you have seen, because I cannot imagine how many essays you have read today that started with “I would be a great Rutgers blogger because…” Also, I did this statement in exactly 300 words.

How could I ever forget you, David?  You suck up so well Wink  j/k  You know I am genuinely fond of you and will have to hurt you or at least take you to lunch if you don't do well.

Anyway, enough mushy stuff. It's fun to re-read your essay "one year later." For me, what stood out in your essay were these:

* great sense of humor
* strong voice
* bad punctuation and yet definite attention to detail

Future applicants should not try to replicate that punctuation part!

Minor, but my inner high school English teacher noticed this:

"not a piece of junk like Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott (Just my opinion)."

should be

. . . Abott. (Just my opinion.)
