Rutgers Time

by Dawn B. 1. September 2010 23:39

Everything still feels surreal, although I’ve been at Rutgers since Friday.

I’ve had a crazy, exhausting past six days. They’ve been both exhilarating and stressful, and I’ve both laughed until my stomach hurt and cried until my throat was sore. I’m FINALLY relaxing in my dorm—the beautiful Jameson H on Douglass.

The past few days have been rough but rewarding. I’ve been stranded on College Ave past 2 A.M. (twice), gashed my heel, and broken out in hives from mosquito bites. I’ve also reconnected with a lot of childhood friends, met Mary Doria Russell (author of The Sparrow), felt true Scarlet Knight pride, and fell in love with the Douglass Residential College all over again (shout out to my hallmates in Jameson!).

Part of the reason I chose to come to Rutgers had to do with all the opportunities a large university has to offer. Of course with so much to do, I had to compromise a bit. I missed almost all of the Douglass Orientation activities because of the Honors Program events and I’m missing out on part of the first football game tomorrow because of class, but I thrive on being this busy. It’s never a dull moment here, whether it be exciting or terrifying (like thinking you’re in the wrong lecture hall for class) and though I’ve been really anxious, I have a feeling that this will be one of the most memorable years of my life. After the involvement fair and seeing how many clubs and organizations Rutgers offers, I got super excited and inspired to make the best out of this year.

Yesterday, at my first Honors Program academic meeting, Dean Matsuda asked us to write a letter to future selves in 2014. I wrote about how even though I had a rough start, it will all be worth it later and I’d laugh this all off in four years. I wrote about how I’m excited to finally have free reign of my life and can finally start working towards my career goal in a personal way. I’m excited to start meeting the people I’ll stay in touch with for the rest of my life. I can't wait to look back at these entries four years from now and see how much I've grown.

My hall meeting is about to start—I’ve loved hanging out with the other (fifteen) first-years in my dorm so far while getting so much useful advice and insight from the upperclassmen.

I’ll detail my week in pictures soon!

Nice entry. You'll read this in a few years and reminisce about this irreplaceable time in your life.

I see a little bit of myself in your entry, and maybe that's because you referenced helpful upperclassmen. ;)
(I am actually just kidding about the last part.)

Keep up the good work.

I'm smiling (all the excitement) and cringing (gash?  stranded?) Do tell how you got back to Douglass, please, as you obviously did.  I'm curious what you thought of The Sparrow.  I very much look forward to a chronicle of your life in pix.

@ David - Thanks for the pep talk and encouragement!!!

@ Justine - Of course you're in my entry Laughing you've been SO uber helpful.

@ Melissa - Thank you!

@ Ms. Dmochowski - Hahahaha the first night I called my boyfriend who lived on Hamilton and decided not to suffer waiting for a bus and stayed over his place. The second night I was cryingggggg my eyes out cuz the buses got really delayed due to a break down and I was frustrated and tired... but luckily my friend came to join me (she lives in New Gibbons) and we eventually made it back running (and with more waiting). I've decided if I'm going to go out that late I'm coming back before 2am hahaha. And both gashes I have are from the dining hall doors--people open them too quickly behind me. Battle scars for the win!

And I liked The Sparrow, although I really dislike science fiction in general. I read the sequel, Children of God, and liked it a lot more. Ms. Russell is SO full of life and she was so excited talking about her books and after meeting her I definitely came to understand how/why the books were written that way.

Thank you all for reading!!!

I love the enthusiasm! Rutgers is a HUGE university, but it has so much to offer to someone willing to reach out for it, like I know you are. You're going to do great things, Dawn. I can feel and see it in you already. =)

REPRESENT... I think.. if that's me. Why are you so excited about college Dawn? I need you to rub off on me.

@ Archana - Yes lol that was you. I wrote about that night in my letter to myself in 2014. I had a realllyyyyy bad start, but now that I'm really seeing all the opportunities (I just got asked for a cover letter and resume for an internship! And I loved Rush last night) here I'm so excited. It's exciting to seek out a new place to get comfy, I guess. I still feel hella lost but no experience is wasted.

I hope you'll post more about the internship, Dawn.  And, truly, life is easier when you're on the "right" campus at 2 a.m. Wink Here's hoping you feel right at home really soon.

@ Ms. Dmochowski - I hope I get it!!! And haha I'm learning lots of things the hard way but it makes for some good stories. I think I'm slowly but surely finding a niche.
