This past Saturday, I went to the Museum of Natural History with the Honors Program. We went to the Planetarium to see a show called "A Journey to the Stars" narrated by Whoopi Goldberg. I had a total throwback to when I was five and saw my first space show in Washington, D.C.--the screen and the theatre were just as fascinating as they were thirteen years ago. There's so much personality in the universe and so many things still undiscovered. We're all made from the same stuff as stars. The show tied in nicely with the points raised by the Honors Colloquium theme this year--First Contact.
My first time really realizing what the sun was when I was three, playing in the backyard at a family party. I felt how hot it made the metal trays outside, and how my well my black hair held its warmth. I stayed outside for the whole party and watched the sun set. My sister told me about the horizon and how the sun hides underneath it to sleep, and how it slowly comes out of hiding in the morning to greet us all again. My parents named me after the dawn, for each new beginning it brings, celebrating their first contact with America the year I was born.
The Colloquium has its last two sessions in the next two weeks and even though I wasn't the happiest camper to roll out of bed and have an engaging conversation at nine in the morning, it was a very relevant topic to any freshman entering Rutgers. We had our first contact with college life, and with new professors and new classes. We encountered each other's dialogues and arguments, and experienced our first college exams (which sucked so bad, but are pretty much over for me now--with flying colors!) along with the experience of living away from home with complete strangers. I'm in awe over how fast this semester flew by and still really excited for what's to come, and for all the people I'll keep meeting and all the new things I'll learn.
