In which I stroke my Decembeard and wax poetic about feminism.

I apologize for my (sort of) long absence, but Thanksgiving break left me absolutely exhausted.  I had intended to simply hibernate in my room at home for 5 days with a mug of hot chocolate and some new books, but those plans were cancelled because a.) I had to attend 3 (THREE!) Thanksgiving dinners and b.) my high school friends actually kind of wanted to see me.

Anyway!  Today we had our last plenary, one that was focused on the mentors that have been in our Knowledge and Power classes with us.  I'm not going to lie; it was kind of lackluster.  I was all excited because I wanted to see my mentor Lauren (hi Lauren!) speak about her indie glasses and possibly feminism or something, and THEN THE WHOLE PLENARY WAS TAKEN UP BY THE OTHER PEER MENTORS.  I mean, sure, they talked about interesting stuff, like their struggles with choosing a major and depression and being a non-traditional student, but did they have have black-framed indie glasses?  NO.  NO THEY DID NOT.

It got me thinking, though.  We've been bombarded with all these feminist messages all semester: Women can do anything!  Women are disenfranchised! Women should also participate in No-Shave November!  (Full disclosure: I did not.)  I liked it, because I have considered myself a feminist for a while.  Despite my snark, I actually love living in an all-female community.  I've grown really close to my dorm-mates, who are all intelligent and beautiful and will be really successful someday.  But there's a part of me that wishes there was no need for a community like Douglass.  I wish there wasn't such a huge gender divide; I wish that we could all just do what we wanted and there was no more sexism and that rainbow kittens would fall from the sky and perform choreographed dance numbers whenever we were feeling blue.  But since that's about as likely as Sarah Palin learning how to read, for now Douglass needs to remain as it is: AWESOME.

P.S.: As soon as I'm finished with this entry, I'm going to be applying for the Women and Creativity House!  I have to write an application essay, so please pray that the Essay Gods smile on me!
