A Candlelite concert...

minus the candle light?

Well, not really, but sort of.

As CarolAnn mentioned in her previous post, the wonderful women of the Voorhees Choir joined in song at the annual candlelight winter concert.  The chapel was decorated with wreaths and poinsettias, and every other pew had a candle holder.

For some reason, I thought the candles were supposed to be lit, but they weren't.   Believe you me, as pretty as it would have been, I was relieved.  You see, part of the concert involves the choir processing up the aisle two by two whilst singing "O Come, All Ye Faithful" and holding (battery-operated) lit candles.  That aisle is not what I would call extremely wide, and guess whose clutzy wide back-side was at the head of the line?

I was scared to death that I was going to knock one of the candles down and set the entire chapel ablaze, and the choir with it as we were decked in our glorious polyester concert apparel.  Not exactly the way I wanted to end the semester.

Thankfully (for me), I have it under authority that the candles will be lit for Yule Log next week, and I don't need to worry about causing the destruction of a DRC landmark.

Oh, you see that stair case at the front of the chapel?  That's also for Yule Log...the 'stair seniors' stand on them and do readings...while holding candles.  Evidently, my husband was scolded after the concert because of those stairs.  He was waiting for me to come back from changing and found the assymetry of the stair case curious, so he decided to walk up and take a look.  Oops.

The concert itself was wonderful.  We sang songs that celebrated a variety of different winter holidays.  I managed to get about 75% of the notes out (thank you sinus infection that completely ruined my voice the week of the concert.  I couldn't sing more that 5 notes of one of my favorite pieces, 'Cradle Hymn.'  Bah.)  The two student conductors did a marvelous job on their pieces and made our professor cry (and it was practically impossible not to do the same...between being so proud of them and so happy that the choir was performing so well for them, I was waivering between grinning like a fool and bursting into tears myself.)

I will really miss choir next semester.  My schedule next semester won't allow for it.  Part of it is because I really do enjoy singing, and I'm learning quite a bit about vocal music that I've never really had the opportunity to learn.  The thing I will miss most, however, is the fact that choir is one of the places at school that I've made some friends.  I don't know the name of more than 5 people in my academic classes, but choir, though a lot of work, is where I found people I actually want to know outside of class.

In closing I will leave you with a picture of two great alto II's...CarolAnn and myself, in concert apparel splendor.  To my Voorhees ladies, I will miss you next sememster.
