Ahhhh...
Feels good to be back. Break was long but necessary. Sadly 2 days into the semester, classes and unfortunately the work load is in full session. I just finished reading the 3 chapters assigned for Biology Lecture, and I couldn’t think of a better way to relax than to blog. This is the 1st chance I’m getting to actually sit down and take a breather. Unlike all of the other Rutgers Students, I did not get the "day-off" on Monday for MLK day. I was with my work-study job on a retreat (that’s right...retreat).
During my Summer Orientation, we were escorted all over Rutgers and at the end of the last day; the RutgersZone hosted a "party". The RutgersZone is in the Livingston Student Center on Livingston Campus and is a restaurant akin to a Dave & Buster’s. We have spectacular food along with 16 games and 10 HUGE TV’s (93 inches!). I was immediately drawn to the fun atmosphere and decided to apply for the job. This was THE BEST decision I could have made. This job isn’t like all of those other dry work study jobs. I love that I’m not sitting at a desk pushing papers and filing reports. At the RutgersZone, every day is different. Earlier in the year, we went to see a NJ Devils game at the Prudential Center free of charge. The seats were great. Before seeing this game I did not like Hockey...at all. I found it boring in comparison to my favorite sport (football). Now, I am proud to call myself a Pittsburgh Penguins Fan, and would LOVE to go to another game in the near future. That was the highlight of my Fall Semester.
For the spring, our Manager Matt Ferguson took us to an all-paid retreat to Camp Bernie Y.M.C.A. At first, I was nervous about going so far into the mountains almost an hour away in the snow. It was freezing. After an hour drive into what seemed like a scene out of the next ax murderer movie, we arrived at Camp Bernie. The Camp itself is great! Its sooo big and has something for everyone. We did countless activities that both tested our knowledge of the job we do at Rutgers and tested the trust we held for our peers. Before the trip, I didn't know the names of half the people I worked with. By the time we piled onto the bus to go back home, I not only knew everyone’s names but I developed a bond with them that was unlike any other. we had all suffered in the cold, stomached the camp food, mastered challenges, and pushed both our minds and bodies beyond we thought possible. This trip was a Success in all senses of the word.
I would love to work for The RutgersZone all 4 years of college and would suggest it to everyone I know. This experience was one that I will never forget. Speaking of work, I gotta go lol. When you find yourself on Livingston Campus feel free to stop in the RutgersZone. Tell em you Read it here, and that Melissa sent you =]
