Walls, Schedules and Contemplations

by Nagma K. 21. January 2011 00:09

It feels great to be back to my room, I’ve gotten right along to decorating it and making it feel more homey than ever. With the help of my amazing roommate we created a masterpiece on our walls :D

Also, classes have started and finally getting down to doing my work. Until yesterday I was swirling around, basking in the post-break high. The workload is finally hitting me and its time to get focused people! I’ve got the following schedule for this semester:

Really really really really really (to the power of infinity) nervous about Calc II, I’ve only always heard crazy negative things about it and how difficult it is but I’m definitely staying positive and I’m going to give it my best. I’m excited about women’s leadership, as I hope it’ll give me an opportunity to rediscover the feminist side of myself, although that would be an interesting feat since my professor for that class is a man. Hmmmm. Other than that, there are the continuation courses from last semester – Chem and Physics and I’m taking Intro to comp for engineers. All in all, a great semester to look forward to, I have more time in between which I intend to use for joining campus organizations. In fact, next week there’s the first meeting for Engineers Without Borders (EWB) which I’m really excited to join. It’ll be amazing to join a group of people so motivated to helping others and changing people’s lives through their efforts.

Between all this work, I need to figure out what major in Engineering I want to declare. It has been very confusing so far, I was so sure that I wanted to do Biomedical Engineering but after listening to a lot of opinions my views are changing on it. Sometimes I just feel like the satisfaction of helping others would get me by, but then I’ve been hearing a lot about job shortages for people with only a bachelor’s degree in BME. I just hope I manage to solve this problem before the end of this semester in time for my major declaration. Engineering orientation lectures should come in handy there and I’m going to meet with an advisor either tomorrow or next week, call a close friend who is working after her BME degree to discuss and finally take some time to just sit and think this out. So here begins a serious start to this new semester, I just hope i'm up to it.

Hi Priya!
What major do you intend to pursue?
Life at Rutgers has been great so far, with ups and downs, for more just keep reading all these blog posts, there's always something interesting going on. To be honest, Rutgers was not my first choice, but i've made the best decision by coming here.

For the scholarships, I think you'd be better off contacting Rutgers' Financial Aid office by giving them a call, the number should be on this website: http://studentaid.rutgers.edu/default.asp

Or contacting Rutgers admissions, and this is a brief overview of some scholarships that you may be eligible for (not too sure though): http://admissions.rutgers.edu/costs/scholarships.aspx

Hope that helps a bit. Smile
and sorry for the late reply

Hi Nagma!
First of all, I love all your posts! Secondly, I'm a junior thinking about going into engineering and I was wondering, what do you think of the engineering program (is it hard? do you enjoy it?)? What special opportunities have been available to you as an engineering student (especially as a woman)? & What is your general opinion on life as an engineering student at Rutgers? Thanks! Laughing

Hey Liz!

Thanks so much! I'm glad you love them Laughing

Well, honestly i've only just started completing my requirements, it is the workload that takes alot of getting used to. I've heard from upperclassmen about how the classes generally tend to get harder as you go up. But, then again that shouldn't be a reason to discourage you! Its hard, but rewarding because I like what i'm doing, and i'm definitely not giving up even if there are a few roadblocks in my way.
In fact, I was just considering writing a post about this, so i'll answer the rest of your questions there Smile
Take care!
