How NOT to make a good impression on a professor

by Jenny L. 14. February 2011 21:20

A short anecdote, and then some pictures!

On some day last week, in an unamed class with who-knows-which professor, we had a quiz. Please visualize more than one hundred students in a lecture hall, of which I am sitting in the very back row.

"Who needs a pencil?" asks the professor, and I immediately raise my hand, expecting that I will have to share the precious commodities with other students who did not realize that their quiz would be a scantron.

I am the only one who raises a hand.

Out of more than one hundred people.

Awwwww, c'mon.

I'm sitting in the very back and am the only one who didn't bring a pencil. Oh, cowpie!

The prof hikes all the way to the back of the lecture hall and hands me a pencil, which I receive with shaking hands and a stuttered thanks. At this point, there appears to be a fluorescent halo around the professor's head. Professor, I am indeed worthy of your divine academic judgement. Please condemn me to the bad-student list.

After class, I check Sakai (which is kind of like an online classroom where profs can make announcements and post resources and stuff).

Announcement: "Bring a #2 Pencil for the Quiz on _______," posted much earlier than the date of the quiz.

Now that I think about it, I think it says to bring a pencil for tests on the syllabus, too, but I am too scared to confirm this.

. . .

At least I aced it?

Anyhow, shout out to my SaTW teacher! Yes, I know I never post. But everyone else has much more interesting posts. Spike Lee? Missed it because of class or work or something. Costa Rica? Haha, nope. Cupcakes? I wish. Generally an awesome life? Still working on it.

But, some pictures of the seriously beautiful Rutgers landscape to hopefully boost the interesting level! Quite a lot of stuff, but it is an accumulation of a few months of school now. I have a few more that I'll probably post at some other time.

Murray Hall, College Ave. Before Expos one lovely morning last semester.

From the same bench as above.

Fall semester vs. spring semester. View from the practice rooms of the Douglass Campus Music Annex.

Busch Campus!

Voorhees Chapel (hope I got the name right!) from both sides.

Douglass.

The morning we woke up and discovered the trees completely iced over (from my dorm, New Gibbons, Douglass).

One hour and fifteen minutes of this day left. Have a wonderful remainder of Valentine's Day!

This is a great post!  I love your honesty, humor, and photographic ability.  Thank you for this.  I grinend the whole way through.
