First of all, I'm back home in my lovely Suburbia! Finally, some relaxation after a grueling week of exams and intense scholarship writing. Sleeping on my super comfortable bed at home also made me realize I should probably invest the extra $50 into a nice mattress pad to bring to school. Yay for Amazon Student Prime via having a Rutgers email address!
Today I was chillin' at the dentist office, when the secretary asked me where I went to school. The obvious answer is “Rutgers, New Brunswick!” but then she prodded further and asked me if I actually went to Douglass, remembering a year ago I had my heart set on out-of-state women's colleges like Barnard and Bryn Mawr. Hmmm. The things people remember when you only see them twice a year.
“Yup! I love Douglass! Couldn't imagine going elsewhere.”
Cool story, bro.
The days leading up to Spring Break were intensely dedicated to Douglass. I found out two weeks ago that I'm going to be a Red Pine Ambassador for next school year! Along with my roomie Gabby, and most of the freshman in Jameson—I love how everyone's so enthusiastic and proactive. I can't imagine living in a dorm without them! Last weekend, the Douglass Student Recruitment Network hosted a Spring Overnight Weekend for Admitted Prospective Douglass students. We planned fun activities for the weekend, including a delicious luncheon, bingo for prizes, walking/bus tours of Douglass and the rest of Rutgers, and a time to hang out and paint picture frames as a gift from us to them.

I helped co-chair a committee with my friend Yamila. While it was a lot of work, it was also a lot of fun and a successful weekend overall. Co-charing a committee put me in touch with some of the Douglass deans (one of them had already read my blog here on Costa Rica and my article in Rutgers Today, whaaaaat? :D) and taught me more quirks about catering, getting organization discounts, and brought me closer to the people with whom I worked while having “adventures” of this sort:
Weeeeeeee ice cream tub cleaning fail. No, we didn't clog the drains, although that would have been hilarious/infuriating for people who lived in Jameson C.
My hostees are definitely enrolling in Douglass if they come to Rutgers :)
Last Monday I went to the Douglass LEAD House's Hunger Banquet, which served to raise hunger awareness around the world. As attendees entered, they were each given a colored ticket that was either labeled Low Income, Middle Income, or High Income and based on that they were seated. The High Income tables had nice tablecloths, chairs, and centerpieces, Middle Income tables had tablecloths and chairs, and the Lower Income sat on the floor with nothing else. I noticed as everyone began filing into the room that most people were put into the Lower Income group—representative of how the world is broken up in terms of income. We were each given a meal—the High Income group had a meal of steamed vegetables, beans, bread, and water, the Middle Income group (of which I was a part) had only beans, bread, and water, and the Low Income group had only bread. There were presentations on the reality of hunger and poverty (even in our own country, considered one of the richest in the world) and what we can do to help. There are places in New Brunswick like Elijah's Promise Soup Kitchen and the Better World Cafe in Highland Park that helps to combat hunger in our city. For such a small living-learning community, the Douglass LEAD House did a great job revealing the food disparity in the world by a real-life depiction. The banquet was the day before International Women's Day, and to help get everyone excited there was a guest performance by Chaos Theory, an all women's hip-hop dance troupe. See their performance here.
I drowned in exams and studying for the past two weeks, and ended the week passing out on my bed on Thursday and waking up kinda late on Friday to finish four different scholarship essay packets and somehow fix my entire Douglass ePortfolio, which is something that showcases my achievements and goals throughout my college career. From 11am to 3pm I did some non stop writing, and ran around Douglass for an hour hunting down the offices to submit my applications but they were all on time! I also wrote up an application to speak at Sacred Path this year and to be a Voorhees Mentor for the signature Knowledge and Power class every new Douglass student has to take.
Totally Douglass'd out you ask?
Never!

My sorority sister Joy and I reppin' Iota Sigma Beta and Douglass all at once <3
