The Joy and the Agony that is...Summer Courses

by peggyc 20. June 2011 21:02

I am currently taking 1 class this summer that is worth 4 credits (General Chemistry 2, if you're interested.)

4 credits crammed into 8 weeks. This means:

  • a chapter covered every day or so (though my professor is perpetually behind)
  • a quiz or test every week
  • lecture four days a week
  • recitation twice a week.

Now, my 4 credits is nothing compared to some people I know (*cough,CarolAnn,cough*) who are taking 2 classes during the summer sessions (during the same session at that.)  The formats run the gambit, from similar to mine above to 2 meetings per week at 4 hours each, to hybrid courses (part in-person, part on-line), etc and so forth.

One of the great things about summer courses is that the class size is smaller.  My professor actually knows my name without me having to prompt her (I was actually quite shocked, because I've never actually TOLD her my name.  Evidently my reputation precedes me...I'm just not sure if that's a good or bad thing), and it's easier to get attention when needed.

It is stressful though.  I can't imagine being one of the people taking Gen Chem 1 and 2 this summer...12 weeks of class, 6 weeks for each course.  That is intense.  I already eat, sleep and breath Chemistry...I'm thinking those folks are bathing in it as well (hopefully without any acid burns.)  Another bit of a bummer: unless you can get financial aid for the summer, the cost of classes is out of pocket.  I wasn't able to, so my part of our tax refund went to pay for school.  Hooray! Undecided

In other news: I have definitely found more ways to be active at school.  I'm going to be a peer advisor for Bunting students as well as a Voorhees mentor in the Spring (I have to get that application in...) I'm also going to be taking a leadership position in one of the organizations I belong to, but I'll save that information for a little later...we're still ironing things out.

I'll be on campus until July 21...so if it's before then, I should be able to make it work.
