One of the privileges of being a Rutgers Blogger, besides getting the chance to share my experiences with you wonderful readers, is getting to use a Flip Camera to supplement what I write. Unfortunately I found out 30 videos later that there was an uploading limit on the site, but fear not! I will link and upload what I can in this blog!
A Letter from Us Bloggers to the Incoming Rutgers Students
Dear Future Rutgers Students
My first project with the Flip Camera was to make a video blog dedicated to you incoming students. I really hope it was helpful to some of you in making your decision to come to Rutgers, and really, if you have any questions reach out to us! We love questions :) in fact, when I was reading this blog last year and last summer (even re-reading as I was prepping my first blog) I had SO many questions that I reached out both to Phyllis Lee and David Alexis who helped me tremendously! (Thanks guys ;D)
Spring Break
I have shown my inner nerd a few times on this blog... well here's the real deal. In high school I was part of something called the New Jersey Junior Classical League--as in Classical civilization, Greek and Roman mythology, lovers and conjugations of the Latin language. I competed in these quiz bowl things called "Certamen" and placed every year and since I'm now an alumni (WAH it was seriously a highlight of my high school career), I got to proctor Certamen at Princeton University. Every time there's some NJJCL thing going on, we recite the creed before hand... and scream it by the end. I guess you wouldn't understand unless you're crazy about it like I am, hahaha. There is a college version called the New Jersey Senior Classical League in case anyone is interested in that kind of thing!
I also drove out with my friend Tudor (like 90 minutes away...) to Cici's Pizza Buffet. And instead of eating we did
this.
Community Service
What's awesome about going to college in a city, especially Rutgers (New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden all have this in common), is that there will always be a lot of ways to get involved with the community. Whether within the Rutgers community or the communities in the city, I highly recommend volunteering at one point or another!
Breaking the
Rutgers University Dance Marathon record: $380,351.10 FOR THE KIDS :)
This is the
heart of Dance Marathon. This is what we fight for all year and what it culminates in after the 32-hour long event.
Rutgers University Relay for Life - $60,000+ raised for the
American Cancer Society.
New Jersey Folk Festival - Children's Pie Eating Contest
My roommate was the Children's Activities Coordinator for the New Jersey Folk Festival. I helped out with children's activities and also witness the magic of priming children for food eating contests!
Because You All Know I Love Douglass So Much
As part of the Douglass Studet Recruitment Network, we plan two overnight weekends for prospective students. We also buy ice cream for them and often don't finish the ice cream. This video is our tactic of getting rid of it...
Sacred Path Ceremony
The Sacred Path Ceremony is a Douglass tradition symbolizing the moving-up of the classes. It was one of the best memories I had of my first year at Rutgers because it was a night to celebrate being in a community with the most wonderful women I've ever met in my life.
My little speech thing!
Exploration Outside of Rutgers
England:
Mindlessly following the mob at the Brighton Festival in England. Being that I am 4'11'' I couldn't see much :(
Fighting the wind on another walk in England.
Exploring Vita Sackville-West's garden was one of my favorite experiences in England. My love for flowers always trumps my hatred of bugs.
I totally ran into this protest in Brighton, England by accident!
New York City:
If you take advantage of the awesome student discounts Rutgers can offer you, you can see Broadway shows for $35 including transportation! And therefore splurge on a fancy dinner at Ellen's Stardust Diner, where your waitors and waitresses sing for you! They are Broadway hopefuls who use their tips to pay for vocal/dance/acting lessons.
Boston, Massachusetts:
Taking that mid-April roadtrip to Boston with my three guy friends (well, two guy friends and one special-guy friend ;D) was also one of those memorable Rutgers moments away from Rutgers. Loved
Fenway and watching the
Boston Marathon!
Riding in Cars with Lee
(LOL at my interjection at the end, the woman who came up to the car is my friend's mom!)
Blogging wouldn't be possible without the help of Lee Ann Dmochowski (who is the mastermind at Go-Rutgers.com--email her for an invite if you lost yours! And then add all of us :D) who also helped build some RU Student Blogger community by getting us together for meals, commenting on our stuff, and helping us get some private space to film that first video I posted. She was nice enough to give us all a ride back to Douglass after we were done filming (we would all be Douglass girls--goes to show how AWESOME it is). David Alexis got to be the odd one out in this group--he was neither a current Blogger nor Douglass woman (or even a woman at that point), but he still came out to help us!
Peace Out, Class of 2011
With every beginning, there is an ending, and then a new journey again. I have hung out with a lot of seniors this past year and saying goodbye was very bittersweet, but I'm excited to see what they will do with their Rutgers education. It was weird for me to sit in the audience of graduation, not yet out of high school for a year (my graduation was at Rutgers too--by the way we left a legacy, if you're interested in watching), feeling so young and shocked that time had gone by so quickly. Enjoy every moment while it's with you!
