Greetings everyone! I’m Richard Wong, and I have the pleasure of being one of the Rutgers student bloggers for the 2011-2012 school year. It’s been a month and a day since I’ve moved in to Rutgers, and so far I’ve enjoyed every single day of it. It’s a different experience from anything I’ve ever had before, to say the least, but I love it! My floormates on the 8th floor of the North Tower are so awesome, and in time I’ll let you guys have a glimpse of what it’s like being a Penthouse Princess.
In addition to it being a month and a day since I’ve moved in, there’s something else special about today: It’s my birthday! And three of my floormates’ birthdays! And Google made us a cake! (not really, but it is Google’s birthday too, and I did happen to see a Google streetview car on Cook/Douglass) At any rate, it’s another thing that’s different from the pre-college life – I have never before met anyone with the same birthday as me, much less celebrated it at 1 in the morning with my friends.
And of course, I can’t finish a post without telling you about one of the interesting things that has happened to me at Rutgers: A few days ago, probably sometime while I was on my way to math class, I lost (technically left) my wallet on a Rutgers bus. I figured it out it was missing at the LDC, when I was about to get dinner. Luckily, you can punch in your student ID number (though I think there’s a limited number of times you can do this), so I was safe, at least for a while. I checked my room, the floor lounge, and the Kilmer Library before concluding I had left it on the bus. Of course, I did the logical thing and decided to not tell my parents until the next day. (note: this is actually a bad thing to do, tell them immediately)
Fast forward to the afternoon of the next day: I got a phone call from my mom, and she, in a concerned tone of voice, tells me that they found my wallet on the bus, and that I had to go to the Public Safety Building to get it back. Naturally, I couldn’t just go get it without something going wrong. The first REXL bus went out of service, and so did the next one. However, that driver happened to shout at us “Get off! This bus is going out of service!” (bus drivers do deserve their breaks, but they could at least be cordial about it). Unfortunately, she happened to forget to put on the brakes, and so her (empty) bus hit the (full, doubly long) B bus, and everyone had to be evacuated.
This was obviously going to take forever to fix, and the next REXL would arrive in 16 minutes, so I decided to be adventurous and do some bus-hopping. I got on an LX, and disembarked at the Rutgers Student Center, and got on the F bus right before it left. I took it to the Public Safety Building, and got my wallet back. I got out just in time to sprint for another F bus, and then speed-walked from Jameson Hall to College Hall, and caught another F bus just in time for it to take me to the SAC, whereupon I waited a minute for an LX to take me back home. Of course, it sounds much less interesting on paper, but I assure you, it’s much more exhilarating and mentally rewarding in real life, and it definitely beats waiting around for a crowded bus. Try it sometime!
edit: 1 hour and 21 minutes late, no big deal :P
