OK, never, ever hit enter when composing a blog post.
Hi everyone, I'm Lorri, one of your designated commuter bloggers. I'm a "non-traditional" (read OLD) student, and I could not be more thrilled to have transferred to Rutgers this year. I'm a Landscape Architect major, considering a second major in English, so I spend a lot of my time on the Cook/Douglass campus. How beautiful is this place? I'm a member of the Yule log committee, so I hope to meet a lot of you at the Yule Log celebration December 11 at 4:45 if you don't see me before then.
I work with two Rutgers grads who assured me that commuting would be a special kind of hell, but I don't think it is at all! There's nothing nicer in the morning than coming in off Rte. 1 and seeing the horses and sheep grazing in the fields that line College Farm Road. Pure heaven. In fact, the worst part about commuting had nothing to do with Rutgers. I'll warn you youngsters now if you're planning on coming back later in life, don't lend your kids who are dating Rutgers students your cars! So by the time I got all the parking tickets straightened out the "D" zone was sold out, and I'm stuck in the commuter lot, but the good news is that I've encountered no problems parking, and most of my classes are a breezy 5 minute walk. We'll see if the boy continues to live once the really cold weather hits....
Settling in hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be either. The first week was awful, it's HARD to be an old lady in a sea of young faces, but the University does a great job of providing lots of social opportunities, and within two weeks I felt like I blended right in. Of course it helps that there are plenty of folks my age in the L.A. program too. If you're feeling shy or isolated, I recommend joining a club or committee. It forces you out of your comfort zone, but that's part of what college is all about. Plus, you get built in friends who share at least one of your interests. I'm one of the shyest people you'll ever meet, so if I can do it, you can too!
So, I am off to class, but I'm looking forward to all of you posting your opinions of commuting life, or life in general over the semester.
Make it a great one guys!
Lorri
