Amongst my friends in high school, I was known as the fragile klutz. Everyone knows this kind of person: the one that falls while standing still, the one that falls waking up the stairs, or the one that, I don't know, might have run through a screen door once or twice. You get the picture. This brings me to my embarrassing story of the day. A little background for you: every Monday morning, my roommate and I get up early and go to breakfast at the dining hall so that we have time to catch a bus around 9:15 at the Student Center. In college, 9:15 is EARLY. People act like it's 5 in the morning meaning they are cranky, irritable, and basically mad at the sun for existing. These are the kind of people that now hate me. I was in a good mood this morning for some reason so while riding the bus, I decided to give bus surfing a go. For those of you that don't know bus surfing means riding the bus with no hands and trying not to fall. Knowing how clumsy I am, I was so shocked/proud of myself when I tried it and didn't immediately fall. So I kept doing it. My roommate then joined in and we had a little competition. "First one to grab the pole loses." Five seconds in, she grabbed the pole and I was still standing. She grabbed the pole four times before I even flinched. I got cocky. Then the huge hill came and all of my bus surfing glory came to a crashing halt. The world was in slow motion. I could feel myself falling backwards as I reached desperately for the pole. It was like a movie: I actually did the slow motion "NOOOOO" thing they all do in the best action films. But I didn't grab the pole in time and I fell back on about three angry morning bus riders before I could bounce back and stand straight. I apologized immediately but they were not amused. My roommate and I were those stereotypical freshmen laughing obnoxiously about something embarrassing. It didn't help up make friends. The worst part was that I didn't have to get off the bus for two more stops so I was stuck trying to avoid eye contact with everyone around me.
Since the buses are such a huge aspect of Rutgers, embarrassing bus stories are inevitable so I'm sure this is just one of many to come. Stay tuned.
