On the Outside Looking In

by Lorri 11. November 2011 07:54

OK, so maybe it's just because I'm naturally inclined to be shy, maybe because I feel like I'm too old to talk to a lot of the people I meet, whatever, but I've been paying attention lately and I have noticed that regardless of what situation I'm in, I am planted firmly on the outskirts of the crowd.  Class around a table for discussion?  I'm sitting in a chair on the wall.  Lecture series after hours?  Everyone else is gathered at the fireplace, I'm at the back of the room.  This is not to say that people don't go out of their way to talk to me, they do.  Rutgers has some of the nicest people in the world on its campuses!

Now, I'm not writing this to get my own little pity party going, I'm fine on my own, and I have a close circle of awesome friends off-campus.  But I know I'm not the only one here who is on the outside looking in, and with the holidays coming, that feeling of isolation doesn't get any better. SOOOO, if you are one of those gifted people who becomes best friends with anyone you speak to in 5 minutes, take a look around for the kid on the fringes and say hello.  You look a little strange to them too, but everyone has something great to offer if you take a moment to get to know them.  If you are one of the kids on the fringe, step into the circle.  I know it's hard, but we're not in high school anymore, no one is going to be mean just for the sake of being mean.

And everyone, COME TO YULE LOG ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11!!!!!!  It's at Voorhees Chapel, the ceremony starts at 4:45pm SHARP! and there will be a great reception WITH FOOD and music in the NJC Lounge at the Douglas CC immediately after.  Even if you don't speak to a soul after, this beautiful tradition will fill you with a sense of peace and community, and we could all use a little of that, especially around the holidays.  But come and say hello to me, that way I won't feel like such a doink!!!  :)  I put a pic below so you know who I am (I miss Jamaica!)

Have a great weekend everyone!

It went really well...about $150 raised for Sophia Club!  Lisa's a natural born seller (and having yummy product certainly helps move things!)
