As a public institution, Rutgers is committed to accessibility. University aid and scholarships of varying amounts are available to bright and talented students who choose Rutgers for their college education. During the 2008-2009 academic year, more than $119 million in aid was allocated to first-year students. In the fall of 2008, almost 1300 incoming students received University merit awards, representing about $10.5 million in merit aid. Merit awards are competitive and are allocated based on available funding.
