Choosing a College

There are roughly 4000 colleges and universities in the United States alone. How does a student narrow that group to the handful to which he will ultimately submit an application? Some students start their search by identifying colleges offering their intended major, others first identify appealing geographic locations, and still others let campus size steer their search. Even with these excellent starting points, there can be a lot of anxiety around the creation of a manageable college list. Did you know that there is a free college search service that will create a list for you? The College Board offers College Matchmaker at absolutely no cost. This computer-based program asks students to provide the details of their ideal college environment and then provides a list of schools that meet those criteria. You can indicate your preferences ranging from major interest and maximum distance from home to availability of housing and average SAT scores. To try out this College Board service, visit http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/adv_typeofschool.jsp

Many schools purchase the names of students whose SAT or ACT scores and interests match the admissions profile or major offerings on their campus. That is one reason students get so many college brochures they don't remember requesting and are not interested in reviewing. At Rutgers University, we have created the perfect solution to the college mail problem. We give students and parents the opportunity to create their own information packets. Not only can you customize your packet to your child's academic interests, you also can include extracurricular activities and pictures that might appeal to him. You can create an unlimited number of information packets at no cost. Create one now by clicking the link above or visiting  http://infopacket.admissions.rutgers.edu

What Should My Child Be Doing Now?

Many colleges have application deadlines in November and December, so at this point your senior really should have accomplished the following:

  • finalized the list of schools to which he plans to apply
  • compiled a list of requirements for each school, e.g., which schools require essays and which want recommendation letters
  • requested that his SAT or ACT scores be sent to all the schools to which he's applying
  • met with the teachers he intends to have write recommendation letters
There are schools with application deadlines in January and some as late as March. But keep in mind that whether it is the initial application for admission or a housing application, earlier is always better.

Did You Know?

Of the nation's nearly 4000 colleges, only 150 are so selective that they turn down over half of their applicants.

At Rutgers, 63% of classes enroll fewer than 30 students; only about 4% enroll 100 or more students.

Eric Clapton went to college to study stained-glass design but was expelled for playing guitar in class.

In a recent survey of 1,000 teens, 62% plan to attend college within four hours of home, and 59% plan to attend public institutions.
