About Materials Science and Engineering

Use plastics or other disposable material to develop high-performance fabrics. Develop carbon nanotubes or graphene materials to help sense bacteria, chemicals and other dangers in our food and water supply. In this major you will study the chemical and physical nature of materials at the macro, micro, and nano scales. You’ll understand the relationships between structure, properties, and processing of engineering materials, with an emphasis on applications and materials design.

You’ll learn from highly regarded faculty who have a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring and regularly take students on plant trips to see how materials science and engineering is applied in industry, commerce, and national laboratories. The large number of faculty (25) provides you with many and varied opportunities to conduct research….which means you’ll be highly sought by industry or graduate schools.
