About Meteorology

Forecast the weather. Understand climate change. Use your strong math and science background to understand the processes governing the motions and behavior of the atmosphere, and its interactions with land and ocean surfaces. The Rutgers major in meteorology features:

  • Small sophomore classes where you begin to learn about weather observations and forecasting
  • One-of-a-kind WeatherWatcher program and Living-Learning Community where you’ll live in a residence hall (that includes a professional television studio) and obtain experience that enables you to get your foot in the door of television broadcasting
  • A storm chasing 2-week summer class
  • A WSI Max Weather real-time forecasting system (the same technology used by ABC, CNN, and CBS!)
  • Undergraduate research with faculty at institutes such as the Center for Environmental Prediction and the Institute of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences
  • Internships for part- or full-time work (earning degree credit) in meteorology-related fields or with the Office of the NJ State Climatologist.
